David Contorer - President (Detroit)

In October 2011, David Contorer became Executive Director of Hebrew Free Loan in Metropolitan Detroit. Prior to that, David spent six years as Director of Philanthropic Services at the Community Foundation for SE Michigan—consulting with more than 170 501(c)(3) for-impact organizations to build assets, strengthen Boards and promote donor stewardship. From 1995 – 2005, David worked in the Jewish Federations of Greater Philadelphia and Metropolitan Detroit in campaign, endowment, corporate/foundation grants, Israeli partnership programs and with constituent agency capital campaigns.
David was born in Portland, Oregon and attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison for his bachelor’s degree in communications. Following two years with Teach for America teaching ESL at a middle school in Houston (and part-time, work at the Jewish Federation of Greater Houston), he moved to Ann Arbor to get his Masters of Social Work and certificate of Judaic Studies at the University of Michigan. David is currently pursuing a Master’s Degree in Business Administration from Wayne State University in Detroit, with a focus on for-impact organization / foundation management and the growing marketplace for microloans to spark development.

Since 1996, David has been very happily married to Beth (an administrative law judge with the Social Security Administration), and they have two fantastic daughters—Danielle (14) and Maya (11).
